This episode returns to the very essence of traditional martial arts. Timed to coincide with the dramatic progression toward national unification in the NHK historical drama “Toyotomi Brothers!”, the program takes an in-depth look at the methods of combat practiced during the age of the Toyotomi brothers.

Viewers will witness reenactments of armored warriors engaging in large-scale battlefield combat, as well as demonstrations of the Kagiyari (hooked spear), a weapon said to have been used by Kato Kiyomasa. Featured sword traditions include Tai Sharyū, which was studied by Tachibana Muneshige and Ōtomo Sōrin and became widely practiced in Kyushu; Bokuden-ryū, descended from the swordsmanship of Tsukahara Bokuden, whose teachings were also studied by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki; and Shinmusō Hayashizaki-ryū, renowned for its techniques of swiftly drawing a sword measuring approximately one meter (3 shaku 3 sun) in length.
